Stakeford is a compact former mining village and electoral ward in Northumberland, sitting on the north bank of the River Wansbeck in the north-east of England. It lies close to former collieries and larger towns such as Ashington and Morpeth, and its name is said to come from a line of stakes that once marked a ford across the river.
Like much of the area it has a strong post‑industrial character: terraced housing and miners’ heritage mingle with newer developments, local clubs and community groups, and riverside green spaces that attract walkers and anglers. The ward retains a distinct local identity shaped by its coal‑mining past, ongoing regeneration efforts and a steady focus on grassroots sport and community events.
