Wylam is a small riverside village in Northumberland, in the north‑east of England, sitting on the north bank of the River Tyne. It enjoys a pleasant, wooded river setting with good walking and cycling routes and a stop on the Tyne Valley rail line, which makes it a popular commuter base for Newcastle upon Tyne and nearby towns such as Hexham.
The village punches above its weight historically: it’s closely associated with early steam‑locomotive development and is the birthplace of engineer George Stephenson, while early engines developed for the local collieries (notably examples like Puffing Billy) are important parts of industrial heritage. Today Wylam combines conservation‑minded rural character with a lively community spirit, local clubs and events, and easy access to regional employment and culture.
