Map of the UK

Barnack is a small village within the unitary authority of Peterborough, historically part of the Soke of Peterborough in Northamptonshire and now in ceremonial Cambridgeshire. It is famous for "Barnack stone", a hard Jurassic limestone quarried locally in medieval times and used in major buildings such as Ely Cathedral and Peterborough Cathedral, and its parish St John the Baptist church retains notable Anglo‑Saxon and medieval stonework reflecting that heritage.

The surrounding landscape, especially the Barnack Hills and Holes nature reserve, is a patchwork of old quarries and species‑rich limestone grassland prized for orchids and butterflies, making it a draw for walkers and naturalists. Today Barnack remains a small, largely agricultural community with a village feel, while many residents commute to nearby centres such as Stamford and Peterborough, so the village mixes deep historic character with modern rural living.
