Chelmsley Wood is a large council-built estate and electoral ward in the north-eastern edge of the Solihull borough in the West Midlands, created as a post‑war overspill development for nearby Birmingham. It sits close to the motorway network around the M6 and enjoys relatively easy access to Birmingham Airport and the National Exhibition Centre, which shapes much of its commuter and employment patterns.
Originally developed on former woodland in the 1960s and reorganised into Solihull in the 1970s, the area has a strong community focus centred on its shopping and leisure facilities such as the Chelmsley Wood Shopping Centre. Like many large estates it has faced social and economic challenges but has also seen periods of investment and regeneration, with active local groups and projects working to improve housing, jobs and green spaces for residents.
