Great Wyrley is a village and civil parish in the district of South Staffordshire, in Staffordshire, England. Sitting close to the edge of the old coalfield and within easy reach of Cannock and the open heathland of Cannock Chase, it feels like a large village that has become partly a commuter suburb while still supporting local shops, small businesses and light industry.
The area has distinct 19th‑century mining roots and a colourful local history - most famously the early 20th‑century “Wyrley outrages” and the controversial conviction of George Edalji that drew Arthur Conan Doyle’s interest. Canal arms such as the Wyrley and Essington Canal, plus churches, pubs, sports clubs and many footpaths and green spaces, give the parish a strong community character and plenty of opportunities for outdoor activity.
