South Merstham is a mainly residential neighbourhood in the borough of Reigate and Banstead, in Surrey, England, lying on the lower slopes below the North Downs. It sits close to the larger town centres of Redhill and Reigate and benefits from green belt countryside on its doorstep, with easy access to walking routes and open spaces while still being well connected to London by rail and road.
Historically the wider Merstham area developed around chalk quarries and lime kilns and expanded significantly with the arrival of the railway in the 19th century; today South Merstham mixes Victorian terraces and interwar housing and functions largely as a commuter suburb. Local life centres on community amenities, schools and small businesses, and there are several conservation-minded pockets that reflect the area’s longer history amid ongoing suburban change.
