Hyde is a town in the metropolitan borough of Tameside, on the eastern edge of Greater Manchester, sitting beside the River Tame and close to the hills of the Pennines and the fringe of the Peak District. Its position makes it both part of the Manchester conurbation and a convenient gateway to nearby countryside and reservoir walks.
Historically it grew rapidly in the 19th century as an industrial town centred on cotton mills and coal, leaving a legacy of brick terraces, mill buildings and transport links. Today Hyde is largely residential with pockets of light industry and commuters to Manchester, while local regeneration projects, community groups and easy access to rural recreation shape its contemporary cultural and social life.
