Compton is a small village and civil parish in West Berkshire, a few miles south of Newbury set on the rolling chalk of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Its position on the downs gives it a rural feel of farmland, hedgerows and walking routes, with the downland landscape and nearby valleys reflecting a long history of mixed agriculture and traditional village cottages clustered around a parish church and green.
Locally the economy still leans on farming and small local businesses, while many residents commute to larger centres such as Reading or London. The village has the familiar social trappings of rural Berkshire - a village hall, a pub and community events - and benefits from proximity to the racehorse training country of Lambourn and good road links, so it combines quiet countryside life with reasonable access to regional services.
