Steyning is a compact market town in the district of Horsham, set at the foot of the South Downs and close to the tidal stretch of the River Adur. Its attractive High Street of shops, cafés and independent traders sits within a conservation area of many listed Georgian and medieval buildings, and the town’s position makes it popular with walkers, day visitors and commuters - Brighton and even London are within reasonable reach.
Steyning has deep roots, with Saxon origins and a notable parish church that reflects its long history as a market place; the community still supports an annual arts festival, a local museum and lively village clubs. The town also remembers its more recent past in the form of a disused railway line from the 1960s that has become part of local trail networks, while small-scale agriculture, tourism and independent retail remain important to the local economy and social life.
