Box is a compact village in Wiltshire, sitting in the shallow valley of the Bybrook on the eastern edge of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a few miles north‑east of Bath. The local landscape is defined by limestone scarps and old quarries, with lanes climbing up to open chalk downland and good views across the surrounding countryside, so it attracts walkers and people who commute into Bath and Bristol.
Box has a strong industrial and architectural heritage: its famous limestone - often called Bath stone - was quarried locally for Georgian and Victorian building, and the parish is dominated by the engineering landmark of Box Tunnel, bored by Isambard Kingdom Brunel for the Great Western line in the 19th century. Today the village remains a mix of residential community, small local businesses and historic buildings, with pubs, a medieval parish church and the visible scars of quarrying giving it a distinctive character.
