The village and civil parish of Box sits in a steep-sided valley in north-west Wiltshire, just a few miles west of Bath. Box Hill and the surrounding escarpment give fine views across the Cotswolds, and the valley is crossed by the small River Bybrook, making it a pleasant spot for walkers and day visitors.
Box grew around extensive Bath stone quarries and the arrival of Brunel’s Box Tunnel on the Great Western Railway, and many local buildings reflect that warm, honeyed stone. A medieval parish church (St Thomas à Becket) and an active village community remain, with quarrying reduced but heritage, local events and easy commuting to nearby towns sustaining the local economy and social life.
