Chitterne is a small village and parish in Wiltshire, England, set on the northern edge of Salisbury Plain where chalk downland, seasonal winterbourne streams and scattered Bronze Age barrows shape the landscape. Historically the community formed around two nucleated settlements, often known as Chitterne All Saints and Chitterne St Mary, giving the place a distinctly rural, layered character not far from the market towns of Warminster and Salisbury.
Local life has long been rooted in agriculture and small-scale rural trades, though many residents now commute to nearby towns; the village retains a tight-knit social fabric centred on its churches, village hall and traditional cottages. The proximity of military training areas on Salisbury Plain has also influenced land use and local history, while historic farmhouses and field patterns underline Chitterne’s longstanding place in the Wiltshire countryside.
