Donhead St. Mary is a small, rural parish in south Wiltshire, sitting close to the border with Dorset and a few miles from the market town of Shaftesbury. It occupies rolling chalk downland and mixed woodland on the edge of the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so countryside and walking routes are a strong feature of the local scene.
The village centre retains a medieval parish church and a number of traditional cottages and listed buildings, and the local economy is still shaped by farming alongside small rural businesses and tourism. Residents tend to form a close-knit community, with many commuting to nearby market towns such as Tisbury or Salisbury, and village life revolving around the church, village hall and quiet lanes.
