The small village and civil parish of Tollard Royal lies on chalk downland close to the Dorset border in south‑west Wiltshire, within the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and within easy reach of Salisbury. It is a compact, largely rural settlement surrounded by farmland, parkland and woodland, with prehistoric barrows and earthworks nearby that reflect the long human presence on the downland.
Its name recalls the medieval Tollard family and later royal connections, and the village retains a medieval parish church alongside a number of listed cottages and estate buildings. Much of the district is managed as country estate and agricultural land - notably around the Rushmore Estate - and today the local economy combines farming and estate activity with small‑scale tourism and commuter residents; socially it remains a close‑knit community with the church, village hall and occasional local events at its heart.
