Trowbridge is the county town of Wiltshire, set in the valley of the River Biss. It grew from a medieval market into an industrial centre in the 18th and 19th centuries thanks to a booming woollen cloth trade and a string of riverside mills; that industrial heritage is still visible in converted mill buildings and in the local museum, which tells the story of cloth-making that once made the town a regional powerhouse.
Today Trowbridge combines its administrative role - with county services based in the town - with a mixed modern economy of retail, light industry and services, and good rail and road links to Bath, Bristol and Westbury. Recent regeneration and community arts projects have refreshed the town centre, while easy access to surrounding countryside keeps Trowbridge a practical base for commuters and families.
