Haxby is a small town and civil parish just a few miles to the north of York, lying within the City of York unitary area. It has roots stretching back to the medieval period but remained largely agricultural until the 20th century, when suburban expansion and good road and bus links to York turned it into a popular commuter settlement with easy access to surrounding countryside.
Despite modern growth it still feels village-like, with a compact centre of independent shops and pubs, primary schools, sports clubs and active community organisations. The local economy is mainly residential with small retail and service businesses, and regular community events and green spaces help preserve a distinct local identity alongside visible traces of its historic past.
