The ward brings together Fountainbridge and Craiglockhart, sitting to the west of central Edinburgh where canal and river corridors - notably the Union Canal and the Water of Leith - meet Victorian suburbs and grassy hills. Craiglockhart Hill and the striking former hydropathic hospital, famous as the wartime hospital where Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen were treated, give the area a strong historic identity, while the industrial past of Fountainbridge is visible in converted mills and warehouses along the water.
Today the area is a mix of long-standing communities, students and professionals, with active regeneration, new housing and creative or office uses tucked among parks and towpaths.
