Inverleith sits to the north of the City of Edinburgh and is best known for its generous green spaces, notably the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and Inverleith Park, which give the area a leafy, suburban feel while keeping the city centre within easy reach. The ward contains a mix of Victorian and Edwardian villas, mews and modern flats, and lies close to neighbourhoods such as Stockbridge and the New Town, with the Water of Leith running nearby through Dean Village.
Historically developed in the 19th century as a genteel suburb, the area today remains relatively affluent and residential, with an active local community, independent shops and cafés and regular events in the parks and gardens. Economically it’s dominated by residential households and small local businesses, while the botanic gardens and green corridors add cultural and scientific interest that attract visitors and researchers from further afield.
