East Renfrewshire

Council area in Scotland

Coordinates:55.76, -4.39
OS grid ref:NS 50 54

East Renfrewshire sits on the south‑west fringe of Glasgow, combining affluent suburban towns with stretches of rolling countryside. The area includes communities such as Newton Mearns, Giffnock, Clarkston, Neilston, Barrhead and the conservation village of Eaglesham, so it feels like both a commuter belt and a collection of distinct local centres.

There are notable green spaces and historic touches: Rouken Glen Park in Giffnock is a popular family spot, Mearns Castle sits close to residential neighbourhoods, and the moorland around Eaglesham hosts the large Whitelee Wind Farm with walking and mountain‑bike trails. The mix of suburban tree‑lined streets, conservation areas and open moorland gives the area a strong outdoor appeal.

Economically it has shifted from pockets of traditional industry in places like Barrhead and Neilston to a modern commuter and services base, with local retail hubs such as The Avenue in Newton Mearns. Socially the area is known for good schools, relatively high incomes and an active community life, including a notable Jewish community centred around Giffnock and Newton Mearns.
