Auchtermuchty is a small, picturesque former market town in central Fife, Scotland, set on gentle agricultural slopes of the Howe of Fife. Its name is thought to come from Gaelic meaning roughly "upland of the pigs", and the town still shows a compact main street of 18th- and 19th-century buildings, a parish church and the feel of a traditional mercat town.
Historically the town served surrounding farms and drew trade from weaving and other rural industries; today Auchtermuchty combines local shops, small businesses and a proportion of commuters to nearby towns. It benefits from proximity to attractions such as Falkland and the Lomond Hills, and retains an active community life with clubs, annual fairs and amateur dramatics that keep social life lively.
