Dingwall is a small market town in the Highland region of Scotland, lying on the banks of the River Peffery near the head of the Cromarty Firth. Its name derives from Old Norse meaning “thing-field”, reflecting Viking roots and a medieval role as a local meeting and trading place; remnants of an old castle and a compact street plan still hint at those origins.
Today Dingwall serves as a service centre for surrounding farmland and small businesses, with a rail junction linking the Far North and Kyle of Lochalsh lines and good road connections to Inverness around 14 miles away. The town retains a lively local culture - markets, community events and Highland games - and is popular with visitors for views across to the Black Isle and easy access to nearby hills.
