Midlothian is a largely rural council area just south of Edinburgh, with rolling farmland, river valleys and the heather-clad Pentland Hills and Moorfoot Hills. The landscape ranges from wooded glens such as Roslin Glen to reservoirs and stone-built towns like Bonnyrigg, Gorebridge and Dalkeith.
Historically a coal‑mining heartland, Midlothian preserves that industrial past at the National Mining Museum in Newtongrange, while also boasting medieval and architectural highlights such as Rosslyn Chapel in Roslin and the stately Dalkeith Palace. Today it sits partly as a commuter belt for Edinburgh and partly as a hub for tourism, agriculture and research - the Roslin Institute famously produced Dolly the sheep - giving the area a distinctive mix of suburban communities and strong rural identity.
