Millerhill sits on the eastern edge of Midlothian, just outside Edinburgh and close to Dalkeith, and has long been shaped by its industrial past. The large railway marshalling yard that once dominated the area and the nearby collieries left a legacy of heavy engineering and transport infrastructure; more recently the site has seen regeneration with modern recycling and energy facilities and pockets of woodland reclaiming the edges of the old industrial land beside the River Esk.
Newton Village is a much smaller, semi‑rural community nearby that grew up to house workers for local pits and railway jobs and still retains that village feel and strong local identity. Today it functions largely as a commuter suburb with close ties to the surrounding towns, modest local amenities and a quiet, community‑minded atmosphere while remaining linked to the wider economic changes that have reformed the Millerhill area.
