Loanhead

Loanhead is a small town in Midlothian, Scotland, lying just south of Edinburgh near the wooded valleys of the River North Esk and the lower flanks of the Pentland Hills. Its location gives residents quick access to both city amenities and nearby countryside, with the historic village of Roslin and its glen only a short drive away.

The town grew up around 19th‑ and early‑20th‑century coal and shale oil industries and still carries that industrial heritage in buildings and local memory, including a long‑standing miners’ culture and community clubs. Today Loanhead functions largely as a commuter and local services centre, with modern industrial and retail areas around Bilston Glen and Straiton, active community groups and an annual gala that reflects a close‑knit social life.
