Danderhall is a village in Midlothian, Scotland, lying just to the south‑east of Edinburgh and near Dalkeith. It grew up as a coal‑mining community in the early 20th century and the imprint of that industrial past still shapes the local landscape and community identity, with rows of former miners’ housing and remnants of pit infrastructure giving way to patches of open green space.
Today Danderhall functions largely as a commuter and service community, with local shops, a primary school and community facilities serving residents while many travel into Edinburgh for work. Regeneration and housing change over recent decades have diversified the local economy, but there remains a strong sense of place and social history rooted in its mining heritage and active local groups.
