Newbattle is a parish and locality in Midlothian, Scotland, lying just south‑east of Edinburgh close to Dalkeith. It sits in the agricultural and wooded valleys beside the River Esk, combining estate countryside with a scattering of villages and suburban housing that reflect its position on the fringe of the Capital’s commuter belt.
The area is best known for Newbattle Abbey, a Cistercian foundation of the 12th century whose house now hosts residential adult education and arts activity, and for its strong mining heritage around places such as Newtongrange - home to the National Mining Museum Scotland. Historically dominated by agriculture, estates and later coal, Newbattle today mixes local community life and heritage tourism with modern regeneration and commuting to Edinburgh.
