Abertillery is a town and community in Blaenau Gwent, set at the head of the Ebbw Fach valley in south‑east Wales. The town is cradled by steep hills and former colliery landscapes, with green spaces such as Cwmtillery Country Park and a network of footpaths that reflect its post‑industrial countryside setting.
It expanded rapidly in the 19th century as coal and ironworks shaped the local economy, leaving a strong miners’ heritage and a tradition of rugby, brass bands and community halls. After mid‑20th century pit closures the area has seen regeneration efforts, local enterprises and social projects, while many residents now commute to nearby centres such as Newport and Cardiff, retaining a pronounced local identity.
