Abersychan is a small former industrial town in the borough of Torfaen, south-eastern Wales, sitting high in the eastern end of the South Wales Valleys above the Afon Llwyd. It lies a few miles north of Pontypool and is close to the preserved industrial landscape around Blaenavon, so dramatic valley views and nearby walking country are part of its character.
The town grew rapidly in the 19th century around coal and ironworking, and you can still see terraces, Victorian civic buildings and echoes of that industrial past; the nearby Blaenavon Industrial Landscape underlines the area's heritage. Today Abersychan is largely residential, with many people commuting to centres such as Cwmbran and Newport, and it balances community regeneration and local culture with the legacies and challenges of post‑industrial life.
