Butetown is an inner‑city ward to the south of Cardiff city centre in Wales, clustered around Cardiff Bay on former docklands. The landscape mixes Victorian terraces and social housing with newer waterside developments, set against the reclaimed quaysides and industrial remnants of the coal-export era.
Historically known as Tiger Bay, it became one of Britain’s earliest multicultural neighbourhoods as sailors and dockworkers from across the globe settled there, leaving a strong maritime and cultural heritage reflected in music, festivals and community life. Regeneration since the late twentieth century has brought tourism, jobs and leisure facilities to the waterfront alongside ongoing social and economic challenges, giving the ward a distinctive, resilient local identity.
