Merthyr Vale sits just south of the town of Merthyr Tydfil, tucked into the steep-sided valley carved by the River Taff. The ward is a compact, largely residential area with good rail and road links - the local station provides commuter access towards Cardiff - and it fronts onto popular walking and cycling routes that lead up into the surrounding hills and towards the Brecon Beacons.
Historically the community grew around coal mining and the local colliery shaped much of its identity; remnants of that industrial past and strong working‑class community ties remain visible in social clubs and memorials. The ward lies close to Aberfan, and the wider area has seen gradual economic and social change since the decline of mining, with local regeneration efforts and a steady focus on community facilities and green spaces.
