Tintern is a small village in Monmouthshire, Wales, tucked into the steep, wooded gorge of the Wye Valley beside the River Wye. The village sits on the border with England and looks across to the hills of the Forest of Dean, making it a popular spot for walkers, canoeists and anyone exploring the designated Wye Valley AONB.
Its most famous feature is the atmospheric ruins of Tintern Abbey, a Cistercian house founded in 1131 that helped inspire the Picturesque movement and works by writers such as Wordsworth. Today the local economy is centred on tourism, small hospitality businesses and outdoor recreation, with nearby towns such as Chepstow providing further services and transport links.
