The small market town of Usk sits in rural Monmouthshire in southeast Wales, snug on the banks of the River Usk. The town has Roman origins (the fort of Burrium) and a long medieval legacy crowned by the ruined Norman motte-and-bailey of Usk Castle, which still overlooks the valley.
Today Usk combines a strong local community with independent shops, cafés and regular markets, while agriculture and tourism underpin the economy. The river draws anglers and walkers, there are local museums and annual agricultural events, and the presence of HM Prison Usk is a notable part of the town’s modern social fabric.
