Ferndale sits in the steep-sided Rhondda Fach valley within Rhondda Cynon Taf in the South Wales Valleys. Surrounded by wooded hills and reclaimed industrial land, the town has a compact high street and rows of Victorian terraces that reflect its valley-setting and offer easy access to walks and viewpoints above the valley.
Ferndale grew rapidly during the 19th-century coal boom and still carries a strong mining heritage in its buildings, community memory and local organisations. After the pit closures the local economy shifted towards small businesses and commuting to larger centres such as Cardiff, while community life remains lively around rugby clubs, miners’ halls and heritage projects that aim to preserve the area’s industrial past and promote outdoor recreation.
