Tylorstown is a former coal‑mining community in the Rhondda Fach valley of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, that grew rapidly in the 19th century around the local colliery. The village still shows its industrial heritage in rows of terraced houses and community buildings, and after the pits closed it has seen modest regeneration and a strong local community spirit, set against dramatic valley scenery popular with walkers.
Pontygwaith is a much smaller settlement nearby whose name – “bridge of the works” – hints at an even older industrial past with forges and transport links serving the valley. Today it feels quieter and more rural than the larger settlements, with traces of industrial archaeology, close‑by riverside and hill walks, and the social history that typifies the post‑industrial Rhondda landscape.
