The ward covers the neighbouring former coal‑mining communities of Tylorstown and Ynyshir in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, tucked into the narrow Rhondda Fach valley. The area is defined by steep valley sides, rows of terraced houses and the ribbon of the river and main road running along the valley floor, and it still offers easy access to upland walks and strong, local views over the surrounding ridges.
Both communities grew rapidly in the 19th century around collieries, and that industrial past remains visible in miners’ institutes, chapels and memorials. The late‑20th‑century pit closures brought economic challenges, but there has been steady community regeneration, a lively local civic and sporting life and many small businesses and commuter links into Cardiff, all of which help sustain a strong local identity today.
