Pentre sits in the steep-sided Rhondda valley within Rhondda Cynon Taf, a ribbon of Victorian terraces, chapels and former industrial buildings squeezed along the valley floor between Tonypandy and Ystrad. The village expanded rapidly in the 19th century as part of the South Wales coalfield; remnants of collieries and miners’ institutes remain visible and shape much of the local landscape and townscape.
Community life has long been marked by a strong working‑class identity: chapels, social clubs and a long‑standing rugby tradition (the local club remains a focal point) keep social ties alive. Like much of the Rhondda, Pentre has faced economic change since the decline of deep coal mining, with regeneration efforts, heritage interest and commuting links into Cardiff and surrounding towns shaping its more recent story.
