Maerdy sits at the head of the Rhondda Fach in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. Perched high in the steep-sided South Wales Valleys, the village was built around coal mining - most notably Maerdy Colliery - and the physical and social landscape still bears terraced housing, memorials and other traces of that industrial past.
Locally it is known for a strong labour and trade-union tradition and a resilient community spirit; since the pits closed the area has faced typical post-industrial economic challenges but also benefits from upland walks, wide valley views and ongoing heritage and regeneration projects that try to preserve its mining story.
