Gilfach Goch is a small former coal-mining village tucked into the steep-sided Rhondda Fach valley in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf in South Wales. It grew rapidly in the 19th and early 20th centuries with the development of local pits and terraced housing, and the landscape still bears traces of that industrial past in reclaimed spoil tips, narrow lanes and pockets of woodland on the surrounding hills.
Today Gilfach Goch retains a strong community spirit with local clubs, heritage groups and events that celebrate its mining history, while the economy has shifted towards commuting and small-scale local businesses, with many residents travelling to Cardiff and nearby towns for work. The village is also valued for its access to countryside walks and views over the valleys, making it typical of the resilient post‑industrial communities of the South Wales Valleys.
