Pen-y-graig sits in the steep-sided valleys of Rhondda in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, close to towns such as Tonypandy and Porth. The village is typified by rows of terraced housing clinging to the hillside, with valley woodlands nearby and road and rail connections linking it into the South Wales Valleys and to Cardiff.
It grew up as a 19th‑century coal‑mining community, and that industrial past still shapes local landmarks, social life and cultural traditions - chapels, miners’ institutes, rugby clubs and choirs remain important. Since the pits closed, the area has seen economic change and regeneration efforts, with a strong local identity and grassroots projects aimed at preserving heritage while encouraging new small businesses and community activities.
