Trealaw is a community and electoral ward in Rhondda Cynon Taf, sitting in the heart of the South Wales coalfield within the Rhondda Valley. The area grew up in the 19th century around the pits and still shows that industrial heritage in its rows of Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing, chapel buildings and miners’ institutes; the landscape is a mix of steep valley sides and settled streets, close to neighbouring towns such as Tonypandy and Porth.
Like much of the former coalfield its economy and social fabric were reshaped by pit closures in the 20th century, and the ward today combines ongoing regeneration projects, local shops and community organisations with a strong sense of local identity and cultural life typical of the Valleys. Good road and rail links give relatively straightforward access to Cardiff and the wider region, while local history and community events continue to mark the area’s mining past.
