Cymmer is a small parish in the steep, closely settled valleys of Rhondda Cynon Taf in south Wales. The name, from the Welsh for "confluence", reflects its valley geography and the rivers that shaped the settlement; its streets of terraced housing and allotments sit beneath the moorland ridges that attract walkers and give wide views across the Rhondda valleys towards neighbouring towns such as Porth.
Historically the area grew as a coal‑mining community in the 19th and early 20th centuries, with chapels, miners’ institutes and a strong choral and brass‑band tradition marking its social life. Since pit closures there has been steady social and economic change: pockets of regeneration, local community projects and small businesses now mix with a continued pride in the parish’s industrial heritage, visible in memorials and preserved buildings.
