Treorchy sits high in the steep-sided coal valleys of the Rhondda Valley in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. It grew rapidly in the 19th century as a coal-mining town and still bears the ribbon of terraced streets and imposing former chapels and pit-related buildings that mark its industrial past.
Today the town combines a strong community spirit and cultural life - best known for its long-established male-voice choir and a local rugby club - with the mixed economics of post-industrial valleys: smaller retail, light industry and community-led regeneration projects. It is served by Treorchy railway station on the local valley line and is a good base for upland walks and panoramic views over the Rhondda, reflecting both the social challenges and the resilience of former mining communities.
