Mountain Ash is an electoral ward in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, sitting along the River Cynon in the heart of the Cynon Valley. The area is characteristic of the South Wales Valleys, with steep valley sides, rows of Victorian terraces from the 19th‑century coal expansion and nearby uplands that give easy access to the fringes of the Brecon Beacons.
Once dominated by coal mining, the ward has a post‑industrial character today: a mix of local shops, community initiatives and commuters using the valley rail line and the A470 to Cardiff. There is a strong local identity - visible in sport, choirs and heritage groups - and ongoing regeneration work aims to tackle economic and social challenges while preserving the area’s mining heritage.
