Swansea (Abertawe)

Unitary authority in Wales

Coordinates:51.66, -4.08
OS grid ref:SS 56 97

Swansea sits on Swansea Bay at the mouth of the River Tawe in south‑west Wales, with the Gower Peninsula - Britain’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - sweeping out to the west. Sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs and the cheerful seaside village of Mumbles give the area a strong coastal character and plenty of outdoor pursuits from surfing to cliff walks.

The city carries a proud industrial past as a 19th‑century copper and coal centre often nicknamed “Copperopolis”, and that heritage is visible in museums and regenerated dockland. Cultural life is lively too: the poet Dylan Thomas is closely associated with the place and is commemorated at the Dylan Thomas Centre, while venues such as the National Waterfront Museum and the Maritime Quarter host exhibitions, theatre and festivals.

Today the economy mixes education, public services, tourism and light industry, with regeneration around SA1 helping to attract businesses and students to Swansea University. Good road links via the M4 and proximity to Cardiff and Bristol keep the city connected, and a strong sporting and community life - from following Swansea City to weekend trips across the Gower - shapes everyday living.
