Trevethin and Penygarn sit on the northern edge of Pontypool in the county borough of Torfaen, South Wales, occupying rolling ground with views that can reach towards the Brecon Beacons. Once shaped by the wider industrial story of the valleys, the area combines remnants of 19th‑century mining and ironworking with large mid‑20th‑century housing estates and patches of green space and former quarryland.
The communities have a mixed social and economic profile, with local shops, schools and community centres forming the core of everyday life and a number of grassroots groups and council regeneration schemes aiming to improve facilities and opportunities. Good road and rail links make it convenient for commuters to nearby Cwmbran and Newport, while attractions such as Pontypool Park and the nearby countryside provide recreational outlets for residents.
