Blaenavon is a compact parish in Torfaen, Wales, set above the Afon Lwyd valley at the northern edge of the South Wales Coalfield. Its streets of terraces and the surviving ironworks and shafts reflect a strong 18th–19th century industrial past centred on iron and coal extraction.
Much of that heritage - notably Big Pit and the wider Blaenavon Industrial Landscape - is UNESCO‑listed, and has helped reorient the local economy towards heritage tourism while a resilient community retains a distinct mining identity. The surrounding hills and walking routes also make it a handy base for exploring both industrial history and the nearby upland countryside.
