The ward covers the town of Blaenavon in the borough of Torfaen in south-eastern Wales, sitting on a ridge above the valley of the Afon Lwyd and surrounded by moorland and surviving coal tips that afford wide views across the South Wales Valleys. Its landscape still bears the imprint of heavy industry, with steep terraces, transport routes and industrial archaeology woven into the townscape.
At the heart of the area is the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with attractions such as the Big Pit National Coal Museum and the preserved Blaenavon Ironworks. Once dominated by iron and coal, the local economy has shifted towards heritage-led tourism, services and community regeneration, while a strong local identity and active voluntary groups keep cultural life and traditional events alive as many residents also commute to nearby Pontypool and Newport.
