Ponthir is a small village and community in the county borough of Torfaen in Wales, set on gently rolling countryside close to the floodplain of the River Usk. It sits within easy reach of neighbouring towns such as Pontypool and Cwmbran, and is popular with commuters because Newport and Cardiff are within reasonable travelling distance.
The village retains a largely rural feel despite the wider industrial history of the region, with a mix of farmland, suburban housing and an active community life centred on local clubs, the village hall and schools. Historic ties to the broader South Wales industrial era are noticeable in local place names and landscape, but today Ponthir is often described as a quiet, community-minded spot where local events and grassroots sport play an important social role.
