Acrefair and Cefn-mawr are neighbouring former industrial villages in the county borough of Wrexham, Wales, sitting on the northern side of the valley formed by the River Dee. Their location close to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and the Llangollen Canal gives the area attractive riverside and canal-side scenery and links them to one of the region’s most visited heritage landscapes.
Both villages have a strong 19th‑ and early 20th‑century industrial heritage - coal, iron and chemical works and the associated canals and railways shaped their growth - and you still see that in the rows of Victorian terraces and local landmarks. Today they are largely residential communities with local shops, community centres and an active local identity, while many residents commute into Wrexham and beyond; the mix of Welsh and English cultural influences is still evident in schools, clubs and community events.
