Chirk is a compact border village in the county borough of Wrexham in northeast Wales, sitting where the wooded Ceiriog Valley meets the lowlands of Shropshire. It’s best known for the medieval Chirk Castle, and for the waterways that thread the area - the village lies beside the River Ceiriog and the Llangollen Canal, with the striking Chirk Aqueduct nearby and the UNESCO‑famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct a short distance away.
Today Chirk combines a small local economy of light industry and services with tourism and outdoor recreation; canal boating, walking and cycling are popular, and the village is also a commuter stop on the Shrewsbury–Chester line. Its mix of industrial heritage, attractive countryside and easy road and rail links gives it a quietly distinctive character on the edge of Wales.
